Starting a side hustle on the internet while I was stuck at a desk may have been the single-most pivotal decision I ever made.

Of course it does. We’ve all seen it a million times – promises of wealth delivered by bots in comment sections, emails, or just about anywhere else they’re able to dump spam links. It’s easy to begin tuning it out.

Unfortunately, this spammy abuse of the system has stained the concept of earning an income on the internet. The internet is the single most powerful tool in existence to obtain financial freedom – there are entire industries built on using free or inexpensive digital tools to generate revenue, and there’s no reason why individuals cannot harness them for personal gain. The operative word is ‘tool’ – like any tool, you have to learn what its applications are and how to use it. Here are just a few of the ways that people earn an income from home, while on vacation, or even to supplement their income at work when they have downtime:

  1. Blogging
  2. Ecommerce

I am not promising that you’ll be able to make a million dollars on any single one of these methods in a month, but these are critical skills to have. The most important thing is to get started – a very smart friend once told me, “Success is what happens when opportunity meets preparedness.” In other words, while you’re waiting for the opportunity to reveal itself, you should cultivate the skills and resources you will need to capitalize on it once it does. In this case, you could have the most exciting idea in the world, but if you don’t know how to connect it with the correct audience, it might as well not exist, at all.

So, as I said, I highly recommend at least exploring some of these topics. These are not meant to be deep dives, but give you an overview of the different skillsets and quick-start guides for how you can get started.
